Welcome to
The Vortex Senior Project
The Vortex: Green Engineering is a Senior Project developed upon fundamental Green Engineering Principles. Seeking to provide a solution to the problems associated with proper disposal of waste fishing line, the Vortex team wants to provide users with a easy-to-use device which allows for easy storage of fishing line. The Vortex is a novel idea which was first introduced last year during the 2019-2020 TCNJ Mayo Business Plan Competition. In winning 1st place in the Mayo Contest, the idea not only developed a strong merit, but also opened the door for a unique senior project opportunity, including design and fabrication of the Vortex. The team, students and advisors, alike, are committed to the proper development of an idea which can have a positive impact on environmental health, as well as a strong business potential.

The Problem
Recreational Fishing is an opportunity for millions of people to enjoy a leisure activity, yet the waste fishing line left behind has a significant, negative impact on the surrounding environment. Not only does waste fishing line pollute these areas, taking about 600 years to decompose, it also puts wildlife and their habitat at risk.

The Solution - What is the Vortex?
The Vortex is the device which seeks to aid in the proper collection and disposal of waste fishing line. With its easy-to-use design, the Vortex can easily be brought along for any fishing excursion. The Vortex Team wants to develop a product which enhances a better tomorrow.
The Vortex is a handheld device in which users can collect and store their waste fishing line. After collection, the fishing line can then be properly disposed of/recycled at a separate time. The Vortex Team is also formulating ways in which the line can be recycled and repurposed. Owning a Vortex device could also offer users with the availability to send in their fishing line for proper recycling and repurposing.
